Description of the Field Experience Activity and Your Role: Morning Supervision with my Mentor
PART II: REFLECTION
Student supervision and safety is at the forefront of all educational leaders. Welcoming students before school and allowing early arrivals in the building fosters a safe school climate and culture. How a student’s day begins plays a major role on his/her behavior and attitude the remainder of the day. My mentor believes that forming relationships with the students helps to bridge the gap between student and administrator. He values the mornings to interact with students.
I observed many things dealing with the students in the mornings. 1) Students are surprised when adults smile, speak and try to engage them in the mornings. 2) High schools students are not morning people. 3) Many students appreciate you speaking to them however, many just want to be left alone or want to find their friends in the morning. 4) Morning duty is a good time to observe student behaviors and interactions. Watching students interact in the morning tells a great deal about the students.
In the mornings our students either go to the lunchroom, wait in the gym or in the commons area. They are able to use their phones in the morning and they are able to walk around freely in those three areas. The administrators and resource officers are on duty during this time. Students are not allowed down the halls unless they have a written note from their teachers for morning tutoring. I believe that our morning set up works well and we have very few problems in the mornings. As a whole are students are extremely well behaved and show a great deal of respect. If I could change anything I would like for the media center to be open so students could access books, computers or a quiet space in order to study or complete work.
