PART II: REFLECTION
The flu hit hard at our high school and on January 21st the Girl’s Basketball coach could not coach due conrtacting the flu and running high fever. So our Athletic Director had to step in and coach the Atkinson County Girls Basketball team. Our Athletic Director knew I was working on my Leadership Certification and he asked me would I fill in for him and be the GAME Manager for the night
Being the Game Manager of a Basketball Game can be very intimidating. Games can get very heated and fans very rowdy. It is the job and number one responsibility of the GAME Manger to ensure order and safety for athletes, fans and all participants of the game. They are the supervisor of the game. During this game everything ran smoothly. I had to clear some people from standing in front of the bleachers but that was the extent of my duties the Girls Game. During half time I had to escort the officials to the teacher lounge where water and snacks were provided for them. During the 2nd Quarter of the boys game an athlete on the opposing team took a hard fall as he was going up for the ball. This athlete was seriously hurt. I spoke to the trainer and it was apparent an ambulance had to be called. I instructed our Resource Officer to contact the ambulance while his coaches lifted him to the side of the gym. A parent from our sidelines got a bag of ice and we wrapped his knee with ice and a wrap. My Assistant Principal and Mentor Mr. Floyd secured the wheelchair from our office. The ambulance arrived shortly and the athlete was sent to the hospital. I thanked everyone for their assistance and quick thinking as we looked after a hurt player.
After the boys game I escorted the referees back to the lounge and handed over their check for their payment for referring both games. They had to sign an acknowledgment sheet that they had received payment and then they were on their way. I, along with Mr. Floyd made sure the gym was clear and all lights were turned off. Mr. Floyd locked the building and we called it a night.
One thing I learned about my leadership style on this night is that I work well under pressure. I was able to stay calm and complete my duties and responsibilities. One major role of a leader is to stay level headed and not allow your emotions to take over. A leader must take control of the situation, make decisions in a timely manner and stay cool, calm and collected. Being a Game Manager was a great experience and allowed me to see a different avenue of leadership. Dealing with students and teachers is stressful but dealing with adults during an extracurricular activity can be unnerving. Patience, Professionalism and Strong Leadership Skills is essential to be an effective Game Manager. I can’t wait until Soccer and Baseball so I can put these skills into practice again.
