Professional Leadership Experience Plan

SUPERVISED FIELD EXPERIENCE

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN

Candidate: Mrs. Tammy Holton Date: September 2019

Mentor: Mr. K. Joey Floyd

School Supervisor: Dr. Melissa Wilbanks

School: Atkinson County High School

Personal Reflection:

Based on my personality, years of experience, Leader Keys Effectiveness System and the 21st Century School Leadership Skills Survey, I have identified several areas of strengths and weaknesses as it pertains to my ability to be an effective leader.

Strengths:

1) Passionate about my work/career

2) Leads by example

3) Lifelong learner

4) Understands the importance of relationships/community

5) Fosters Enthusiasm, School Spirit, Positive Environment

My top two areas of strengths are my passion and importance of relationships/community.

Passion about work/career goal: To understand how professional learning communities can create and support collaborative work environments and a positive learning culture.

Relationship/Community goal: To continue to learn the skills needed to promote a sense of well-being among faculty, staff, student, and parents.

Weaknesses:

1) Need to include and utilize data more in making decisions

2) Need to be more of a risk taker

3) Need to listen more to my colleagues

4) Need to delegate instead of micro managing

My strengths have helped to mold and shape me into the Teacher Leader that I am today. I have a very unique ability to read people, to work with people and especially to inspire and motivate them. I use personal and career experiences to build relationships and find a common ground. I do this by telling stories of my life, my years of experience in and outside classroom and basically by being transparent with them. My colleagues understand right from the beginning that I am far from perfect but I have a drive for excellence. I share with them who and what inspires me and I acknowledge that over the years I have learned more from my failures than I have my successes.

My weaknesses are something that I also acknowledge and work on daily. As an effective leader I must see my limitations and learn how to overcome them. I cannot allow my weaknesses to be an excuse for poor performance or attitude. I must strive to get better and improve each and every day. How can I be an example and lead others if I am not constantly trying to improve my skills?

Performance Expectation: An educational leader integrates principles of cultural competency and equitable practice and promotes the success of every student by sustaining a positive culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional growth.

Leadership Goals:

· Nurture and sustain a culture of collaboration, trust, learning and high expectations

· Create a comprehensive, rigorous coherent curricular program

· Create a personalized and motivating learning/working environment

· Supervise and support instruction

· Develop the instructional leadership capacity of the staff I work with

· Maximize time spent on quality instruction

· Monitor and evaluate the impact of the instruction

Area of Growth Identified: To be able to lead a collaborative development of a shared vision for educational improvement using data to guide our decisions/plan without micro-managing the project and allowing colleagues shared input resulting in a smoothly operating team and workplace.

The biggest area of growth for me to be an effective leader is to learn to utilized data more in decision making.

Growth Goal: Collect and use data to identify goals, assess organizational effectiveness, and promote organizational learning

Plan Implementation:

In order for me to meet my Growth Goal my principal and my mentor met with me and discussed problems or obstacles that greatly impact instruction at Atkinson County High School. We all three agreed on one particular problem that affects our Special Education Program and our Students with Disabilities. That problem is the lack of a Resource Class for our Special Education Students. A Resource room is a classroom in a school where students with educational disabilities, such as specific learning disabilities, are given direct, specialized instruction and academic remediation and assistance with homework and related assignments as individuals or in groups. This environment is considered their LEA or Least Restrictive Environment. The resource room tends to be less distracting than the regular classroom setting. Many resource rooms also support the social needs of their students in the small group setting and will provide behavior interventions.

In this plan I will identity the problem/challenge facing our school. I will describe the impact that this challenge has on the instructional practice and student learning. I will use data that supports the existence of this challenge. I will describe the expected result of the problem/challenge if it is addressed and how the change will affect instructional practice and student learning. After forming a collaborative team we will develop a plan, implement the plan and reflect on the plan and resolution.

This activity assigned to me by my Mentor will help me reach my Growth Goal in my area of Need. It will allow me to take on more of a Leadership role and at the same time help to address an instructional issue that desperately needs to be addressed. I look forward to the challenge of this activity and working collaboratively on a project that greatly impacts my school and provides me the opportunity to lead. I appreciate my Mentor and Principal giving me the opportunity to serve and to grow as a leader.
