Description of the Field Experience Activity and Your Role: Classroom Observer
PART II: REFLECTION
Since I just became certified in ESOL I decided to go and observe our ESOL classroom at Atkinson County High School. While I was doing an informal observation, Mr. Floyd my Mentor came in to conduct a Formal Observation on the Teacher Keys Platform.
English for Speakers of Other Languages, or ESOL, refers to learning English as a new resident in a English-speaking country. ... ESOL classes can include areas such as survival English, functional language, specific speaking and listening skills, and socio-cultural information. Atkinson County High School has a large Hispanic population. These students come from Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic. Many come to Georgia speaking no English. It is a great transition for them.
In this leadership experience I was an observer of Mrs. Doyle our ESOL instructor and of how the students interacted. This observation was one of the most fascinating and educational opportunities I have experienced this semester. Mrs. Doyle does an phenomenal job. She has a classroom of 15 students from 9-12th grade. She groups them based on how advanced they are in their language development. In today's lesson she was teaching pronouns.
