Description of the Field Experience Activity and Your Role: IEP Meeting: Annual Review. I served as a committee team member.
At an annual review meeting the team revises goals and objectives (including the introduction of new goals and objectives), and determines the student's program, including placement and the need for supports and services. This IEP meeting team consisted of me the regular education teacher, Mrs. Griffis Lead Special Education Teacher, Dr. Floyd-Assistant Principal/LEA and the student.
At this annual review meeting the committee discussed where the student was academically and behaviorally. This certain student transferred from another system a few years back. He struggled academically and failed several classes before being recommended for testing. After testing it was discovered that this certain student had a learning disability that was greatly impacting his performance in the regular classroom. After identifying the need and putting the proper accommodations in place this student is doing so much better. He is still a grade behind his peers but he is making progress. He has goals to attend Technical school after graduation and major in wielding.
During this meeting I was able to analyze and discuss classroom data on this individual student. I was also able to suggest ways for him to improve. I suggested that he register for the SAT/ACT and continue to strive to do his best. During this meeting I demonstrated the Transformational Leadership Style as I identified needs for improvement yet gave him encouragement.
If I could change anything about this meeting it would be the time that it was held. I wish that all of the student's teachers could have been at the meeting so they could have had input. In order for this to happen the Lead Teacher would need to either schedule the meeting before or after school.
Some of the take aways from this Annual Review Meeting:
1) This student has made great strides in his educational performance.
2) I found out some very personal issues that this student is dealing with at home. This information though private will help me to better understand when this student is off task or begins to shut down in class. Not every problem is academic and sometimes stress from home causes more problems then academic struggles.
3) The team approach to IEP meetings is a great way to show a strong front to the student. It demonstrates that we are all working together on his behalf.
